Common Skin Infections That Predominantly Affect Elderlies

Common Skin Infections

affect anyone irrespective of age and gender. While some of these are more common among the children, others are more likely to affect elderlies. The best skin doctors in Delhi suggest that seniors, in general, are at a higher risk of developing skin infections as their skin undergoes numerous changes as they age. These changes include:

  • Increased roughness and dryness
  • Cracked skin
  • Compromised immune system
  • Loosening of skin
  • Benign growths
  • Poor blood circulation

In this blog, we have shed light on some common skin infections that predominantly affect seniors or elderlies, with the help of the experts offering the best skin treatment in India.

  • Shingles – Also known as herpes zoster, it is a viral infection caused by varicella-zoster, the same virus that is responsible for causing chickenpox. Even if a person recovers from chickenpox in his/her childhood or youth, there are chances that the virus may continue to live in the patient’s nervous system and reappear later on and lead to shingles. The infection is marked by red, painful rashes on the skin that often trigger a burning sensation. These may appear as blisters on either the left or the right side of the body. In most of the cases, the problem may vanish within 2 to 3 weeks. There are very rare chances of recurrence. Treatment for shingles is offered at all the best hospitals in India.

Common symptoms associated with shingles include:

  • Red patches and blisters
  • Itching
  • Fevers and chills
  • Headaches
  • Muscle weakness and fatigue
  • Pain or rashes in the eyes
  • Hearing loss
  • MRSA infection – MRSA stands for Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, a dangerous staph bacterium that is quite difficult to treat owing to its resistance to various antibiotics. The symptoms depend upon the area of your body that is affected. It usually appears as mild abscess filled sores and boils. In extreme cases, it can enter the bloodstream and infect the lungs and the urinary tract. There are quite rare chances of MRSA being life-threatening. Discovered in 1961, MRSA is now resistant to methicillin, amoxicillin, penicillin, oxacillin, and other common antibiotics.

MRSA infection is marked by the development of red, fluid-filled bumps that can be very painful. These are often filled with pus.

  • Fungal infections – As the name suggests, these are triggered by different types of fungi and develop at different areas of the body, including the nails and the feet. These are often marked by a change in the colour of the skin. The affected area is usually very painful to touch. It is pertinent to note that fungal infections are communicable, which means that these can be passed from one person to another. You can also contract the infection from an animal or by coming in contact with contaminated soil. Common fungal infections that are found in adults include fungal folliculitis and cutaneous candidiasis.
  • Cellulitis – It is a very common infection that is triggered by certain bacteria. It develops in the deep layers of the skin and initially appears as a tiny red spot that spreads gradually. Although the infection may affect various different areas of your body, it is most likely to be found on the lower legs. In mild cases, it is usually localized with a slight redness in the concerned area. In extreme cases, it can even lead to sepsis. Cellulitis is further divided into the following types:
  • Periorbital cellulitis
  • Facial cellulitis
  • Breast cellulitis
  • Perianal cellulitis

Common symptoms associated with cellulitis include:

  • Swelling and tenderness
  • Redness
  • Fatigue
  • Chills and fever
  • Nausea

There are other such infections that are very prominent in elderlies. All of these can be easily managed with the right treatment and care.
